Eclipse season is finally receding, though we are still living through its aftermath. For some it has left a trail of destruction in its wake; for others, it has brought a profound sense of release, relinquishing something long overdue.

This Virgo New Moon brings a more urgent question to my mind than the familiar Virgo thing of getting life into some sort of better order. While there is still a Virgo reckoning to be had with the parts of life that have slipped out of order, and what it would take to put them right. That never leaves my reality… But the other layer on top is what do we already know is no longer right for us, but have not yet been willing to reject?

What are we still clinging to, despite knowing it’s holding us back? Virgo is concerned with discrimination in the original sense of the word. It is our ability to distinguish one thing from another and recognise what belongs in our lives and what needs to be removed. While later transits really force us to look at the clinging this and next month.

Mercury has just entered Libra and over the next few days, simultaneously trines Pluto and opposes Neptune. Then a day later trines Uranus. Uranus has also just stationed retrograde in Gemini, so there is a lot here around how we think and communicate, what we take in and what we express, and what meaning we make of all this.

The trouble is with Mercury opposite Neptune, as this can make things harder to read clearly. We can confuse what we know with what we want to believe, or what we fear with what we have simply absorbed from the people around us. Discernment isn’t then so easy. Then Pluto pulls us underneath the surface of things, so we see from a deeper space, while then Uranus can suddenly create a breakthrough. This is not a bad combination. It’s possible, if we stick with things, to reach that breakthrough or realisation.

Mercury’s movement into Libra also brings in the views of others. Libra likes to take account of the different sides, keeping things fair, but will often keep over compromising or circling around something. Going around in circles needs to exchanged for moving in spirals.

So this New Moon is not asking for more information, there’s already far too much of that around, but more of our ability to recognise what rings true for us within it all, and how we move through it. Disinformation and misinformation are at rampant levels. Perhaps there’s even a higher mission to fiercely push us away from the constant of draining exchange.

Sometimes we genuinely do not know what is true, this can be our reality much of the time. At other times, the uncertainty itself becomes a refuge, in that we escape into it and prefer to avoid a truth we’d rather not see. We choose to stay in the grey because fully acknowledging what we perceive would require a response from us, as in action and commitment. Sometimes something non negotiable. Who likes to question their values and thinking? A rare few get a kick out of this.

Then we have Venus stepping into Scorpio at this New Moon. She will stay in Scorpio territory for some time as she retrogrades back and then forth from 3 October. So what begins mid September will be revisited, reconsidered, and dived into deeper during the retrograde. On top of that, Mercury also retrograde from 24 October.

It’s good to remember that while Venus in Scorpio can be intensely passionate, that doesn’t mean it’s got truth depth, when the two are not always the same. And we humans are easily fooled. Something can feel consuming or urgent and still be driven more by a whole lot of longing or desperation. Under Venus in Scorpio, the pressure can be on. Especially if we are too tightly bound up with fear or attachment. So pay attention if something feels important or urgent.

And this will become all the more important as Venus moves through towards her square in Scorpio with Pluto on 15 September. The territory here is value and power: what we love and we feel we need. Whatever we are bonded to can easily turn into some kind of survival game, and circumstances can keep us dependent well beyond sell by dates.

And as Venus moves towards her retrograde in October, there will return to this square Pluto again in later October. So there’s. a bit of a development arc with everything Venusian.

So we move from Taurus Chiron which is the wound or gift of worth, what you have, deserve, your resources and your security. To Aries again, which is what it means when we jump in head first. When we do it first. It’s not easy to be the first one as these people often get burnt, attacked. But this is how we create that sense of self.

And this is interesting as both Chiron in Aries, and this repeating Venus-Pluto square is really asking us what happens when our own desire becomes enmeshed with someone elses needs, attachment, expectations or power.

The deeper question is something along the lines of do we feel entitled to stand as ourselves in the first place? And whether we can actually act from ourselves.

How Venus in Scorpio will affect you 

Aries Rising — Scorpio on the 8th House

Venus moves through intimacy, shared money and everything that binds you closely to another person. What is really being exchanged in a relationship may become much harder to ignore. The retrograde can bring joint finances, dependency and trust back up for another look.

Taurus Rising — Scorpio on the 7th House

Venus moves directly through the house of partnership. A relationship may need to show more clearly what it is actually built on. During the retrograde, something that seemed settled may need to be looked at again, particularly where there are questions around closeness, loyalty or power.

Gemini Rising — Scorpio on the 6th House

Venus moves through daily life, work and the body. You may become much more aware of what your routines are actually costing you, and whether they give enough back. The retrograde can bring a work situation, health issue or daily arrangement back under review.

Cancer Rising — Scorpio on the 5th House

Venus moves through romance, pleasure and creativity. You may want more depth from something that has so far stayed on the surface. The retrograde can bring a romantic or creative situation back around and ask whether the desire is genuine, or whether intensity has been doing some of the talking.

Leo Rising — Scorpio in the 4th House

Venus moves through home, family and your private life. Something that has been sitting underneath the surface may become harder to contain. The retrograde can return you to family dynamics, questions of belonging, or what you need your home life to feel like in order to truly settle there.

Virgo Rising — Scorpio on the 3rd House

Venus moves through communication and your immediate world. Conversations may become more revealing, and things that have gone unsaid may become increasingly difficult to leave there. The retrograde can bring old discussions back, giving you another chance to say what you actually mean.

Libra Rising — Scorpio on the 2nd House

Venus moves through money, value and self-worth. You may start looking much more closely at what you spend, what you keep, and what you believe is worth having. The retrograde can bring financial arrangements or questions around your own value back up for reassessment.

Scorpio Rising — Scorpio on the 1st House

Venus moves through your first house, so this transit is deeply personal. What you want becomes harder to separate from who you are becoming. The retrograde may change how you see yourself, what you are willing to accept, and how much of yourself you are prepared to alter in order to be wanted.

Sagittarius Rising — Scorpio on the 12th House

Venus moves through the hidden part of the chart. Old attachments, private desires or feelings you have not fully acknowledged may begin to surface. The retrograde can bring you back into contact with something you thought had gone away, so you can see more clearly what still has a hold on you.

Venus moves through friendship, community and belonging. You may start seeing more clearly where you genuinely connect with people and where you have simply remained because the relationship or group is familiar. The retrograde can bring friendships and alliances back under scrutiny.
